Did the PM mention the old flats in Hougang and Potong Pasir?

Hi Friends,

I watched PM Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Rally speech tonight.

He almost got me glued to the goggle-box!

He seemed to have covered a lot of ground- from Education/Ageing population/CPF and HDB upgrading with government funds. He has become a very polished and confident orator, much like his father , MM Lee.

But I must confess- I was not giving the speech my complete and unadulterated attention.

You see, I was also surfing the TV channels and watching the Man City-Man United match at the same time. And I must have missed some salient points by the PM.

For instance, when mentioning that all HDB flats built earlier than 1980 would be upgraded, he must have mentioned Hougang and Potong Pasir.

Common sense dictates that since the flats in these 2 wards are amongst the oldest in Singapore, it must be their turn for the “sprucing up” seen all over that “Google earthesque” map of Singapore that PM referred to so frequently?

But , I did not hear the magic words of Hougang and Potong Pasir.

Ah, it must have been when I switched channels to watch Man City score the solitary goal against the now very desperate Man United.

Punggol 21-plus with its water feature seemed so fantastic and it must have mesmerized many of you. But did any of you hear the PM mention Hougang and Potong Pasir, eh? You must have.

Now that the match has ended and after licking my wounds and tending to my bruised ego ( esply as my other team Leeds United is now in League One with -9 points!) , I will surf the net for the complete and unabridged speech of the PM to see for I, me and myself the magic words of Hougang and Potong Pasir.

It must be somewhere in the transcript- the whole two and half hours’ worth of it. Right?

Dr. Huang Shoou Chyuan

Hey Doctor, do not anyhow say. HDB is an non-partisan organization. It will take care of Potong Pasir and Hougang if the estates are really old. It is within HDB job scope.

Our First World system is impartial. Do not worry.

PS: If my words do not match reality, its normal.

It is possible for Singapore to be a PARADISE in the sun and it could get SINGAPOREANS PARALYSED in the sun when one has to slave beyond 60 year old to survive, both are likely to happen. Talking about upgradings(of anything) at this point in time of our history is like talking about which champagne 'to pop' when the utililities bills are in arrears. Singapore will be a paradise when the properties and businesses are snapped up by all the affordable foreigners. On the other hand the indigenous(local born and naturalised first/second generation immigrants) who are unable to migrate or refused to migrate will have to work way beyond their sixties as is the case right now. To eke out a living or more correctly just to survive, one has to force oneself to work. Can we talk about 'upgradings'? Can we afford them when many are already in arrears of rentals, instalments utilities and conservancy bills ? I think it is downright irresponsible and sinful to goad citizens toward impossible goals especially materialistic ones when they(citizens) struggle to survive. Please look into Martyn Sees' Nation Builders. If we the people have to be exploited to the maximun to allow foreigners and the few successful locals to live opulent lifestyles that we see in Channel News Asia, Ch 5 and Ch 8, I say to you my fellow countrymen that we really have to wake up and wise up. Every upgradings has to be paid for. It is indeed 'golden time' BUT NOT FOR MOST OF US SINGAPOREANS !

It might be a new upgrading scam to replace the old one for future elections....hahah....Potong Pasir and Hougang will be screwed again many more times.

Dear Sir,

This is PAP we are talking about here, and NOT the government of Singapore. We always assumed that PAP is not equal to the government.

They are for themselves and not for the people. This government costs us millions and millions of dollars, we in the end have to take care of ourselves.

Fortunately the people of Hougang and Potong Pasir have long learnt to take care of themselves and have not placed too much trust in the pledge of "building a democratic society based on justice and equality".

They played their part in serving NS, pay taxes, are subjected to the same laws - but are penalised because they have different political ideology. Where is the justice? Where is the equality?

Equality is for propaganda purposes, where do we find our parliamentarians' family members above sixty year old working? Those that were mentioned and brought to the Rally(2007) are 'propaganda materials' who were happy to have something for posterity by being in the 'Show'.

oh wells, actually despite PM Lee not having to mention anything on Hougang and Potong Pasir, we should at least give him some credit i feel.In channel 5 news, they have actually mentioned that the upgrading of hdb flats will not be limited to those under the PAP constituencies.so dont fret yea =)

If i live in Hougang or Potong Pasir, i would not really fancy those plans. that's no doubt Punggol 21-plus seemed so fantastic with its water feature but water front living is not cheap, it (the rally) sound like someone touting expensive condo to people who could bearly affort it. As long as the TC in Hougang and Potong Pasir is doing a good job, i would be happy if i am the resident.

Hi
anon (12.15am):I hope that your optimism proves correct. I hope all the silly controversial policies like political estate upgrading & GRC etc get reversed.

bacts: The principle should be that no matter which party won the election, the residents should all be treated on a needs basis. It is obvious that the TC's of Hougang and PP had done a good job, if not Low and Chiam would have been booted out already. All residents, even those fr Hougang/PP should be offered "goodies" but no one is forced to accept them.

As far as I'm concerned,
the Gahmen lost its Moral Authority with its HDB Lift Upgrading Policy ... using national budgetary surplus purportedly generated by top-class ministers whose salaries are paid by all tax payers to upgrade HDB lifts on a priority basis that is tied to the PAP's political future!

81% of us live under the 1st Damocles Sword of HDB Lift Upgrading Policy.

17% of us live under the 2nd Damocles Sword of En Bloc Sales and Increased Plot Ratios (the former if living in condos; the latter if living in the suburban NON-Good Class Bungalow districts).

Only the 2% in the Good Class Bungalow districts are sleeping easy ... ever wonder who lives in these GCB districts, ugh?

Nothing could have surprised me more than a doctor engaging in non-conventional singapore politics.

Afterall, PAP support is traditionally strongest with the rich.

But then again, not all doctors are sane - we all know a certain Dr Chee. :)

I haven't read all comments in full, but what repeated in my mind was simply:

The PAP IS our government. Holding a vast majority of parliamentary seats, there is no chance for any opposition voice to result in concrete action.

No doubt, they did a great job.

My issues iare with the system, not the end product.

Anyways, good luck with this commendable spirit!
